This is one gathering I make sure never to miss ever since I ventured into collecting action figures and comic books. I remember last year that I got the flu and still pushed myself to drop by just to be part of the annual event. Of all the ToyCons that I attended, I can say that this is by far the best of em all.
This year’s theme was DC Comics’ 75th Anniversary. I am a huge DC fan; I love the JLA; most of their heroes and even the villains. I even volunteered to display a part of my Batman collection just to show my love for DC and support our toy group, PinoyToyKolektors.
The attendance every year is superb. This year however was massive. The line was so long that it reached to the next level below the venue early on. Different types of geeks were present—toy geeks; comic geeks; anime geeks; photo geeks and the list goes on. The place got really crowded the moment the organizers let people in. As a display volunteer though, I was able to roam around the halls before the halls were opened. Lots of good deals were there; highlights for me were the stalls of Incredible Toys which sells 3 sealed figures of your choice for 1k; 2rats with their wide variety of toy-lines; Comic Odyssey with their discounted comic books. Fully Booked was also there offering 20% discounts on their graphic novels and 20%-40% off their statues. There were also a lot of independent sellers present with unbelievable prices; haggling more just seems wrong this time around.
This would not be a ToyCon without the cos-players and there were tons of them. Regardless of what others say about them; I think it’s great that they are there too; I can’t imagine the halls filled with only guys browsing through piles of toys; the cos-players adds life to these gatherings in my opinion. I just wish that the organizers would consider to have the cos-players and the promo girls at least be in par with the event’s theme; it’d be just great to be in a place filled with capes and cowls for a change. Although there were a few who attended as superheroes this year; the majority still goes to the anime scene.
These are some great looking costumes.
I also met a lot of toy enthusiasts from PinoyToyKolektors; buddies from ComicKolektorPhilippines; ActionFigsPhils and Toy Empire. It was great sharing talks and laughs with them and hanging out at the PTK booth.
Here’s a shot of me with the rest of PTK display volunteers.
Credits to PTK member, Rowel aka Frenzywel, for the above picture of our display and the group shot of the display volunteers. Huge thanks to PTK founder, Dan aka Unleashed, for giving me the opportunity to be part of the collection exhibits and displays. It was an honor sharing this experience with you guys! :)
The annual ToyCon just keeps getting better and better every year. They’ll be celebrating their 10th next year and I heard that they’ll be taking the whole Mega Trade Halls for this. Congratulations to the organizers and everyone involved in making this gathering a huge hit for us.
Here’s a slide show with a few snap shots mostly from the displays that I took.
