Storyline:
Five friends head to a remote cabin, where the discovery of a Book of the Dead leads them to unwittingly summon up demons living in the nearby woods. The evil presence possesses them until only one is left to fight for survival.

I've been meaning to watch the franchise's reboot the day I've heard news of it. Unfortunately, I was not able to see it on the big screen and had to play the waiting game for its home media counterpart to see the light. Well, it has now finally paid off as the DVD is now readily available at the local stores.
Prior to its release, the film has gained a lot of hype from the fans of the original classic. Did the film lived up to the hype?

To make this quick, the remake works pretty well in its own merit. I may have to watch the original films again to be sure, but if memory serves me right, some of the elements from the 80's classics are very well adapted into the remake. The atmosphere is there; how the cabin looks and feels are quite notable; etc. I liked some of the references and a few ideas from the franchise that made it into the new film...but that's it.

Sadly, I'm having a hard time to love this film as much as I want to. First off -- character development was poor, I don't think that viewers did not have the chance to get to know them well. Also, their acting was too stiff for my liking, kind of boring, none of them were quite likable. Next up -- dialogues and lines were way below satisfactory, I don't think I remember any line that is quotable worthy. Lastly -- scenes and outcomes were too predictable, period.

I'd like to point out the amount of gore in this one. In fact, it's nothing but gore from scene to scene that it has become redundant and gross at some point, really. It is kinda bumming that the makers of this one must have thought that extreme violence would be appealing to movie goers.

I thought that I'll be having a couple of nightmares after watching this, turns out that the freight factor of the film was not that truly remarkable. This should be a terrifying flick that went wrong in a lot of levels.

Overall, remake or not, the film had a lot of potential. The effects and cinematography were very good and is still a fun watch. Just try to manage your expectations and you can forget the idea that this will be as good as the original. Keep an open mind and enjoy this one of a gore filled fun flick.

My rate: 3 bats
