Attending book fairs are fun! To avoid the possible hassles and maximize the joy that MIBF will bring, I decided to gather a few of my personal tips when attending these fairs.

I know that we are all pretty much stoked to be able to browse the broad selection of books from the many exhibitors. As a rule, it wouldn't hurt to be extra prepared when it comes to conventions which is why I have collated a couple survival tips:
  • Comfy clothes and footwear will be your best friends for the day.
  • Pack light. No one wants the burden of heavy bags when book hunting.
  • Bring extra funds. This is a no brainer, take no chances and save up for the fair, you'll probably see a couple titles that will trigger the book worm in you;
  • If you can, bring tote bags, or any bag that you think would work for you best. Books are heavy, you would not want to have the hassle of carrying a lot of bags from different stores. Make it easy for yourself and bring a bag that will be able to pack all your possible purchases;
  • Know what you want. Sure, you have a list of titles that you hope to take home from the fair, but based on my experience, and/or if you are like me, you'll probably end up buying more. The convention has always been filled with awesome deals and huge discounts. It will be pretty tempting and hard to resist. Still if you can, avoid impulse buys, especially on books that will probably end up in your unread sections.
  • Manage your options. There will be a lot of options, some run out early, some will still make it till the last day. My advise is trust your guts and take control of your purchases.
  • Grab the freebies! Yep, most exhibitors will have free give-aways and promotional items, don't be shy and ask for some.
  • Lastly, enjoy the fair. There will be a lot of activities here aside from the bargains and all -- book signings; launches; meet and greet; talks; gatherings; etc. Seriously, just have fun.
The 34th Manila International Book Fair opens tomorrow, Sep. 11 to 15, at the SMX Convention Center. See you there!
